Which voices you can get

The narrator in our Word Counter reads with voices that are already on your device. Most devices ship with English and a few other languages, but not always Urdu or Arabic. Here is what is available for free:

Setting up a voice takes about two minutes and you only do it once.

Windows computer

Option 1: Use Microsoft Edge (Urdu and Arabic)

Edge is already installed on Windows 10 and 11. It has free, natural-sounding online voices, including Urdu (Uzma, Asad) and Arabic (Zariyah, Hamed and more). Nothing to install.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge from the Start menu.
  2. Go to the Word Counter and paste your text.
  3. In the narrator, pick a voice that ends in “Online (Natural)” and press Read aloud.

Option 2: Add an Arabic voice to Windows (works in Chrome too)

  1. Click the button below. Your browser will ask to open Settings, so allow it.
  2. Under Manage voices, click Add voices.
  3. Search for Arabic, tick it and click Add. Wait for the download to finish.
  4. Close and reopen your browser, then come back to the Word Counter.

Open Windows voice settings

Windows does not offer an Urdu voice for Chrome. For Urdu on a computer, use Edge (Option 1).

Android phone or tablet

Android uses Speech Services by Google, which has free Urdu and Arabic voices.

  1. Tap Install voice data below. It opens the voice download screen on your phone.
  2. Choose Urdu (Pakistan) or Arabic and tap the download icon.
  3. Close and reopen Chrome, then come back to the Word Counter.

Install voice dataSpeech Services on Google Play

If the button does not open anything: go to Settings → Accessibility (or System → Languages) → Text-to-speech output, tap the gear next to Speech Services by Google, then Install voice data.

iPhone or iPad

Apple offers free Arabic voices but no Urdu voice yet.

  1. Open Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.
  2. Tap Arabic, pick a voice (for example Majed) and tap the download icon.
  3. Close Safari or Chrome fully, reopen it and come back to the Word Counter.

For Urdu, use the Word Counter on an Android phone or in Microsoft Edge on a computer.

Mac

The quickest way to get both Urdu and Arabic is Microsoft Edge for Mac, which includes the same online voices as on Windows.

Get Microsoft Edge

To add an Arabic voice to macOS itself (for Safari and Chrome): open System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content, click the System voice menu, choose Manage Voices, tick an Arabic voice and click OK. Then restart your browser.

Check that it worked

  1. Open the Word Counter and paste a sentence in Urdu or Arabic.
  2. The Voice list should now show an Urdu or Arabic voice instead of “No voice on this device”.
  3. Press Read aloud.

Still not showing? Fully close the browser (all windows) and open it again, because browsers only load the list of voices when they start.

Why can’t I download the voice from SimpiGimpi?

Reading voices are part of your device’s operating system, made and licensed by Microsoft, Google and Apple. For your security, a website is not allowed to install anything on your device, and the voice makers do not allow their voices to be shared as separate downloads. That is why the buttons on this page take you straight to the official, free download screen on your own device instead.
