Discount Calculator
See the sale price and how much you save, stack an extra discount, add sales tax, or work out the original price from what you paid.
How to calculate a discount
Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, 20% off 5,000 is 5,000 × 0.8 = 4,000, so you save 1,000.
Stacked discounts are not added together
Shops often advertise an extra discount on top of a sale, such as “20% off, plus an extra 10% at checkout.” The second discount is taken from the already reduced price, not the original one:
- 5,000 with 20% off = 4,000
- 4,000 with an extra 10% off = 3,600
- Total saving: 1,400, which is 28% off, not 30%.
The calculator shows each step so you can check the shop’s maths.
Adding sales tax
In many places, tax (such as GST or VAT) is added after the discount. Enter the tax rate and the calculator adds it to the reduced price. If prices already include tax, leave this at 0.
Finding the original price
Switch to Find original price if you know what you paid and the discount, but not the starting price. Original price = price paid ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100). For example, paying 3,600 after 20% and 10% discounts means the original price was 5,000.
Quick mental tricks
- 10% off: move the decimal point one place left and subtract.
- 25% off: divide by 4 and subtract, or multiply by 0.75.
- 50% off: halve the price.
Discount Calculator FAQs
Answers about sale prices, savings and stacked discounts.
How do I calculate 30% off a price?+
Multiply the price by 0.7. For example, 30% off 2,000 is 1,400, a saving of 600.
Is 20% plus 10% the same as 30% off?+
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so 20% then 10% equals 28% off in total.
How do I find the original price before a discount?+
Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). For 25% off, divide by 0.75.
Should tax be added before or after the discount?+
Usually after. Most shops apply the discount first and then charge tax on the lower price.
Does it work with any currency?+
Yes. It works with plain numbers, so you can use rupees, dollars, pounds or any other currency.
